Building a historic movement for our schools & communities

Prop 15, the Schools & Communities First initiative, was a historic campaign on many levels. After a decade-long effort to build a massive statewide coalition dedicated to making corporations pay their fair share so our communities receive the public resources they need, we made history with our partners in 2019 by collecting the most signatures ever in support of a California ballot measure.

In 2020, we waged a powerful campaign with the support of hundreds of elected leaders, businesses, and community organizations to reclaim resources from the wealthiest corporations in order to invest in the health and wellbeing of Black and Brown communities.

While Prop 15 fell just short, our campaign built our movement's power and shook up California politics as usual for the long term. Together, we did what many said was impossible: we won unprecedented support from elected leaders and built consensus among organizations in every corner of our state and movement on an issue many thought was “off-limits.” We also built the political and narrative foundation necessary to power future campaigns to reverse a long history of disinvestment in Black and Brown communities.

In 2021, we will continue to organize, grow and flex the power of our coalition to win the resources our communities need in the face of an ongoing pandemic, while strategizing for the next phase of our campaign to make corporations pay their fair share for critically needed public resources like schools, housing, and health care services.
