Defending app worker rights & countering corporate greed in Prop 22

After years of building a powerful movement of app-based workers fighting for dignity and respect at work and organizing to win landmark labor law AB5, gig workers faced new challenges in 2020 from corporations willing to go to any lengths to strip workers of their hard-won employment rights.

This year, Uber & Lyft showed their true colors by pouring over $220 million into a deceptive ballot measure campaign to roll back paid sick leave, overtime, and unemployment by permanently classifying their workers as independent contractors — ultimately deceiving enough voters to win.

But our movement responded by organizing powerful actions across the state and country to demand the rights app workers need and deserve. We gained high-profile supporters — from Joe Biden to Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — and won media coverage around the world. Together with our allies, our Gig Workers Rising campaign put app workers on global headlines and positioned our fights at the center of public policy debates that will define the future of work.

Moving into 2021, Gig Workers Rising will continue to expand our network of app-based workers calling for corporations like Uber, Lyft, Doordash, Instacart, and Postmates to be held publicly accountable to the promises they made about benefits and earnings under Prop 22.

We will work with our partners to inform gig workers of what rights they have under the new law using a new mobile app that arms workers with information on their labor rights. We will also organize to make sure gig workers receive the earnings and benefits they were promised, and continue to build worker power to transform the gig economy.
